All about the art of photography.

The name camera is derived from the precursor of photography, the “camera obscura“ (dark chamber), which has been known since the 11th century. The first photograph in the world was taken in 1826.

Photography - a first overview

Photography is a medium that is used in many different contexts. On the one hand side, objects are imaged with a primarily artistic aspect, or, as in the advertising and fashion photography, with a commercial character. Photography can be considered from an artistic, technical, economic and social point of view. Photographs are also used in journalism and in medicine. Moerover, the market is divided in analog and digital photography.

Lovers still shoot using the analog method. This means that after taking pictures with an analog camera, the development of the film happens via a chemical reaction in a three-dimensional gelatin layer. The image information is then available on the original recording medium. In digital photography, the analog signals from the camera's sensor are digitized and thus get interpretable and processeable electronically. These files are stored immediately after the shoot on the camera´s memory cards. Digital photography revolutionized the possibilities of digital art and enables digital image processing of shooted photos.

Early on, photographs were already regarded as an art form. Alfred Stieglitz (1864-1946) prepared the breakthrough with his magazine “Camera Work“. In 1977, the documenta 6 in Kassel for the first time as an internationally important exhibition presented the works of historical and contemporary photographers from the history of photography in the famous “Department of Photography“.
