Boogie Woogie

The Rock ’n’ Roll Club "Hot-Jumpers" invites you - Boogie-Woogie World Masters 2017

For many, boogie-woogie is just a sub-genre of Rock ’n’ Roll. However, there is globally a whole bunch of dancers dancing the swinging dance from the 1920s. They will meet this year for the Boogie-Woogie World Championships 2017 in Frauenfeld in Switzerland on 10th June 2017.

The boogie-woogie evolved from the East Coast Swing at the end of the 1920s in the USA. The dance steps therefore consisted of the swing dance and the Lindy hop. Indeed, the term boogie-woogie is only common in Europe, where European dance teachers have adapted the African swing dance to the European taste.

Because of its related musical elements, boogie-woogie is predominantly danced on rock ’n’ roll, rockabilly, rock, jump blues and swing. While earlier the music and the dance were used to emphasize the youthful protest against the generation of their parents, nowadays one takes a closer look at a clean and clear footwork in the context of the modern boogie-woogie. If a dancer cuts up about 200 steps per minute on the parquet, it is to be assumed that she or he gets the points in the tournament.

According to the World Rock ’n’ Roll Confederation (WRRC), there are important rules the dancers have to follow. These, for example, specify how music speeds are to be met (times per minute), or that seven couples will be in the final. Interpretation, foot techniques, dance figure execution and guidance are evaluated. The dance is not as determined as in the Rock ’n’ Roll ballroom dance. Pertaining to boogie-woogie, there is more room for interpretations.

Recently, a senior couple from Karlsruhe has aroused a real hype across social media: with their hot boogie-woogie moves, the 64-year-old woman and her 70-year-old husband managed to be clicked more than 62 million times and shared over 1,7 million times.

On 10th June, 2017, the Boogie-Woogie World Championships will take place in Frauenfeld, Switzerland, organized by the Rock ’n’ Roll Club Hot-Jumpers. Preparations are in full swing. The event will be attended by top dance couples from Germany and abroad. The venue is the sports facility in Auenfeld.
