Deutsches Theater
In 1894 here, the play "The Weavers" by Gerhart Hauptmann was premiered. The top-class esemble the Deutsches Theater includes theater stars such as Nina Hoss and Ulrich Matthes. Both, classic theater history as well as pieces of contemporary art are performed.

Volksbühne
The famous Volksbühne was clearly influenced by the artistic director Frank Castorf. Christoph Schlingensief is also very connected with this theater through numerous productions. The edifice of the Volksbühne was built in 1914 and extensively renovated after the devastation of World War II in 2009.

Berliner Ensemble
The home of the sensational success of the Twenties "The Threepenny Opera" by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weil. These same founded the "Epic Theater" in 1949. Even today, contemporary and political theater are performed.

Maxim Gorki Theater
In the times of divided Berlin, the Maxim Gorki was a counter-pole to Brecht's rational-cool Berliner Ensemble. Today, the program focus is on novel adaptations and contemporary staging of classical drama in modern times of the 19th and 20th centuries.
